Why can't I use normal paper in my printer?

The standard infra-red printer (KMIRP) only works with thermal paper, this means that there are no ink ribbons to replace.

The KANE impact printer (KANE IMPRINT) is also infra-red but uses conventional paper and ink ribbon.
