Deaths & misdiagnosis from CO poisoning still too high
laws are changing & more homes must have a CO alarm says this year’s CO alarms saves lives awareness campaign
Jonathan Kane, our CEO, supports the Carbon Monoxide Alarms Save Lives campaign, sponsored by Britain’s four gas distribution networks - Wales & West Utilities, SGN, Northern Gas Networks, and Cadent – and welcomed the new regulations:
“We support mandatory installation of EN50291 CO alarms because they save lives, as do registered engineers who daily test heating appliances with EN50379 analysers”.
This year’s campaign is led by the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group
Why is CO so dangerous?
Our NHS states CO poisoning causes around 60 accidental deaths in England & Wales every year
Multiple cases of CO poisoning are unreported or misdiagnosed - Headaches, nausea & dizziness are common symptoms of CO poisoning and also COVID-19.
What regulations are changing?
England
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 apply from 1st October ‘22.
CO alarms must be in all rented & new build homes with any combustion appliance except cookers - Private & social sector landlords must repair or replace alarms when faulty.
CO alarms are also required when new appliances except cookers are installed in any home.
Northern Ireland
CO alarms are mandatory requirement for homes with newly installed appliances - The Private Tenancies Act also requires CO alarms in privately rented homes at landlord expense.
Scotland
Scottish homes are required to have CO alarms in rooms with appliances or flues except cookers.
Landlords must install CO alarms that must meet the relevant British Standards (EN 50291-1) with ‘a sealed battery for the duration of its lifespan’.
Wales
From 1st December 2022 landlords must fit CO alarms in homes with a gas, oil or solid fuel appliance. For legal advice contact Citizens Advice
